The Contractor Website Checklist: 12 Things Your Site Needs to Turn Visitors into Leads

If your website is missing any of these 12 things, it may be costing you calls and quote requests every week. A practical guide for contractors.

Most contractor websites do not fail because they are ugly. They fail because they do not make the next step obvious.

A homeowner lands on your site. They want to know if you service their area, if you do the type of work they need, and whether you seem trustworthy. If they cannot figure that out in 10 seconds, they hit the back button and call the next person on the list.

This checklist covers the 12 things your website needs to stop losing those visitors.

1. A Phone Number That Is Easy to Find

Your phone number should be in the header, visible on every page. On mobile, it should be a tap-to-call link. Do not hide it in the footer or bury it on a contact page.

If someone is on your website, they are often already close to ready to call. Make it as easy as possible.

2. A Clear Headline That Explains What You Do

The first line of text on your homepage should say who you are, what you do, and where you work. Something like:

"Chicago Roofing Contractor — Residential Repairs and Full Replacements"

That is more effective than a vague tagline like "Building Your Dreams" or "Quality You Can Count On."

3. A Single, Obvious CTA

Every page on your site should have one clear action you want visitors to take. Usually that is:

  • Call now
  • Request a quote
  • Get a free estimate

Pick one and make it stand out. A button that blends into the page will not get clicked.

4. Real Photos of Your Work

Stock photos of construction workers tell visitors nothing about your company. Real photos of your finished jobs — a remodeled kitchen, a new roof, a clean HVAC installation — build immediate trust.

If you do not have professional photos, a few good smartphone photos are better than nothing. Take them in good daylight and show the finished result, not the work in progress.

5. A Service Area Statement

Contractors get calls from outside their service area constantly because their website never says where they work. State your service area clearly:

"Serving Chicago, Naperville, Joliet, and the surrounding suburbs"

This also helps your site show up when someone searches for "[your trade] near me" or "[city] [your trade]."

6. A Services Page That Is Specific

A services page that says "We do it all" is less effective than one that lists what you actually do. Be specific:

  • Roof repairs and patching
  • Full roof replacements
  • Gutters and downspouts
  • Attic insulation and ventilation

Specific services help with search rankings and help homeowners confirm you do what they need before they call.

7. Reviews and Testimonials

Homeowners trust other homeowners more than they trust contractors. If you have Google reviews, pull a few of the best ones and display them on your website. If you have signed off customers willing to leave a quote, ask them.

You do not need 50 reviews. Three to five strong, specific reviews go a long way.

"We had a roof leak that two other contractors couldn't fix. These guys found the problem in 30 minutes and had it sealed the same day. Highly recommend."

That kind of testimonial is worth more than any marketing copy.

8. Mobile-Friendly Design

More than half of your website visitors are on a phone. If your site is hard to read on mobile — small text, buttons that are hard to tap, images that run off the screen — you will lose those visitors immediately.

Test your site on your own phone. Can you easily read it? Can you tap the phone number? Do the images look right?

9. Fast Loading Speed

A slow website loses visitors before they even see your content. If your site takes more than 3–4 seconds to load on a phone, many visitors will leave before it finishes.

Common causes of slow websites:

  • Oversized images that were not compressed
  • Cheap hosting that cannot handle traffic
  • Bloated page builders with too many scripts loading

If your site is slow, this is worth fixing. Google also uses page speed as a ranking factor.

10. A Google Business Profile That Matches Your Website

Your Google Business Profile and your website should tell the same story — same business name, same phone number, same address or service area, same services listed.

If they do not match, Google may rank you lower. More importantly, homeowners checking both will feel more confident when the information is consistent.

Link your website to your Google Business Profile and make sure the profile is fully completed.

11. An About Page That Shows Who You Are

Homeowners hire people, not companies. An about page that introduces the owner, mentions how long you have been in business, and explains why you started the company makes you a real person instead of just another contractor.

You do not need a long bio. A few sentences and a photo are enough to make a difference.

12. A Way to Request a Quote Online

Not everyone wants to call. Some homeowners prefer to send a message, especially after business hours or when they are in the middle of deciding between contractors.

A simple contact form or quote request form gives them that option. The form does not need to be complicated — name, email, phone, and a brief description of the project is enough to start a conversation.
